*Note: This tour can operate daily, but the Cao Son market is only open on Wednesday. Other suggested days to start this tour would be Thursday (visit Bac Ha market on Sunday).

Sapa is a frontier town located in the mountains northwest of Hanoi not far from the border with China. You will visit the villages of the local highland minorities such as the Hmong, Yao and Dao, just to name a few. Our tour requires you to do a little light trekking in order to visit the villages of these colorful hilltribe people.

This tour is designed to be added on as a side trip from Hanoi.

Day 2: Arrive Lao Cai / Overland Transfer To Cao Son Market (B)
Transfer To Your Hotel In Sapa
Meet your local guide upon arrival at Lao Cai train station. He/she will take you to a local restaurant for a Vietnamese breakfast (think noodle soup not toast and eggs). Continue overland enjoying the scenic country side on the way to the village of Cao Son to visit the famous Cao Son Market. Held each Wednesday, this market is where many ethnic minorities come to trade their local products. The Market is also a meeting place for young and old alike to gather and socialize.

Continue to Sapa and check into your hotel.

Day 3: Full Day Village Visits With Some Light Trekking (B)  
Breakfast at hotel. Leaving Sapa this morning by private vehicle and drive southwards past the terraced rice fields in the Muong Hoa valley. Enjoy several photo stops before arriving to a small hamlet of the Black Hmong where you will have a short visit. Continue the trip to Thanh Phu commune. Walking along the large village path for nearly an hour, along the way visit a Tay tribal home built on stilts, see the local Tay people go about their daily life and experience their hospitality. Lunch break at a local home. Continue the trip in the afternoon with a short drive along the rocky road to My Son and walk around this charming village of the Xa Pho tribe whose population is only around six thousand people. Finally, visit the beautiful and prosperous village of the Red Dao people in Nam Than village. This portion of the road offers beautiful scenery of the Nam Sai valley. In the mid afternoon drive back along the same road to Sapa, return to your hotel.
blackhmong Day 4: Excursion To Villages With Light Trekking (B)
Overnight Train To Hanoi

Breakfast at hotel. Travel by vehicle downhill to Mong Sen, where you start ascending on a dirt trail through a mountainous area. En route, enjoy spectacular view over rice paddy terraces and cornfields. Stop for a picnic lunch. After lunch, trek downhill toward Taphin where you get to meet the Red Dao and Black Hmong minorities, two of the ethnic groups in Sapa. Return to Sapa by vehicle in the afternoon.
Overland transfer back to Lao Cai where you will board an overnight train for Hanoi.

Hanoi Day 5: Arrive Hanoi Train Station / Transfer To Your Hotel In Hanoi
Arrive at Hanoi Train Station early this morning. Meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel in Hanoi.
About The Train
There are quite a few companies offering overnight train accommodations between Hanoi and the town of Lao Cai, this is the closest town to Sapa that has train service. Each of these companies have their own carriages that are connected to one of the state run locomotives that travel this route.

The quality and cost of accommodations vary between the various companies. The Victoria Express Train is the most luxurious. To book passage on the Victoria Express Train requires that you also book accommodations at the Victoria Sapa Hotel. This is the nicest hotel in the Sapa area. We also offer the King Express Train and the Tulico Express Train.
Train Schedule
Hanoi to Lao Cai: The trains all depart in the evening, around 9 to 10 p.m., arriving Lao Cai the next morning between 5 to 6 a.m.
Lao Cai to Hanoi: The trains depart Lao Cai between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., arrive Hanoi between 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.
